Camp Erin the Beginning...

Stepping Stones of Hope teamed up with The Moyer Foundation, a Seattle-based non-profit organization, to raise awareness and funds to support the opening of Camp Erin - Phoenix, a bereavement camp for children. The Moyer Foundation has already opened three camps in Washington State, and one in Portland, with plans to open more in Boise, and Palm Springs.

Camp Erin is named in honor of Erin Metcalf, a young woman who developed liver cancer at the age of 15 and died in June, 2000 at the age of 17. Erin met Karen and Jamie Moyer at Spring Training in 1998. Upon her death, the Moyer's wished to honor Erin and her caring spirit by establishing a grief camp for children.

Phoenix mayor, Phil Gordon stated, "To bring comfort to children, in their most profound time of sadness, is something very special and incredibly important. Camp Erin will help ease the burdens that no child should have to carry." Executive Director for The Moyer Foundation, Gary Pollock shared Mayor Gordon's enthusiasm. He said, "Camp Erin is an initiative the Foundation started in the Pacific Northwest and we are thrilled to be able to comfort grieving children throughout Maricopa County."

The Moyer Foundation committed $125,000.00 to Stepping Stones of Hope in 2006. 100K was used to create a Camp Erin endowment, and 25K was used to create and implement Camp Erin - Phoenix which opened in July 2006.

About Camp Erin

Camp Erin for Kids is a 2-night weekend bereavement camp designed to comfort and support children and teenagers who have experienced the death of a loved one. Stepping Stones of Hope hosted their first camp in Carefree, Arizona on July 14-16, 2006, with the next one scheduled for July 13-15, 2007.

Camp Erin focuses on the connection between mind, body & spirit with the curriculum based on the four dimensions of grief: emotional, physical, spiritual and mental. The program provides a caring environment that focuses on healing through creative expression. Age appropriate activities are facilitated to allow for non-threatening supportive dialogue and interactions. Teen activities are geared towards their special needs.

Camp Erin for Grown-Ups is facilitated during the same period of time in an adjacent facility on the property.  Stepping Stones of Hope is the only organization in the nation providing an opportunity for the grieving adults in a child's life in conjunction with the kids camp. The model and curriculum will be similar to the kids program with the ultimate goal of building family cohesion and strong communication skills.
